For Justin Sumba, earning a college degree represents more than an academic achievement. It reflects years of determination, the support of a family that believed in him, and an opportunity that made pursuing higher education possible.
Coming from a working-class family, Justin knew that the cost of college could stand between him and his goals. Through the Indian River State College Promise Program, that barrier became one less thing he and his family had to worry about.

An Opportunity to Focus on What Matters
With most of his educational expenses covered through the Promise scholarship, Justin was able to focus more fully on his education, his personal growth, and the future he wanted to build.
“The Promise Program gave my family and me the freedom to focus on what really mattered—my education and my growth,” Justin reflects. “It removed barriers that would have made college impossible for us.”
But Justin’s experience extended beyond financial support. At Indian River State College, he found mentors who encouraged him, opportunities to become involved on campus, and people who took a genuine interest in his success.
Those relationships became an important part of his college experience, helping Justin grow not only as a student, but also as a leader preparing for his future.
Finding Confidence Through Challenge
As a Health Science student, Justin embraced opportunities to become more involved in campus life and develop skills that would serve him beyond the classroom.
Through campus events, leadership experiences, and guidance from mentors, he gained confidence and learned how to carry himself with greater poise and purpose.
His academic journey, however, was not without challenges.
Rigorous science courses tested Justin’s resolve and required him to dig deeper. Rather than allowing those difficult moments to define his experience, he relied on persistence and the confidence he had developed along the way.
“I stayed grounded and focused,” Justin shares. “When things got tough academically, I just kept pushing forward with persistence and belief in myself.”
Each challenge became another opportunity to grow and another step toward completing the education he had worked so hard to pursue.
An Achievement Shared With Family
When Justin walks across the graduation stage, the moment will belong to more than just him.
Family members traveling from multiple states will be there to celebrate an achievement years in the making. His Aunt Jennifer, mentors, Promise Program staff, and others who supported him along the way will also share in the moment.
For Justin, their presence is a reminder that reaching a milestone like graduation rarely happens alone.
He credits much of his success to the family members, mentors, and supporters who recognized his potential and encouraged him to keep moving forward, even when the path became difficult.
Ready for What Comes Next
As Justin prepares for the next chapter of his life, he carries more than a degree in Health Science with him.
He leaves Indian River State College with greater confidence, leadership experience, resilience, and a foundation he can build upon as he explores opportunities in healthcare.
The financial support that helped make college accessible gave Justin the opportunity to begin. His determination, family, mentors, and experiences along the way helped him make the most of it.
Now, graduation marks both the culmination of that journey and the beginning of something new.
Justin’s story shows what becomes possible when students have the opportunity to pursue their education with the support and resources they need to succeed. For him and his family, that opportunity has opened the door to a future filled with new possibilities.
