Finding His Potential: Juan Penagros’ Journey Through the Promise Program

Coming from a small town, Juan Penagros arrived at Indian River State College ready to discover what college could offer. What he found was a welcoming community that challenged him, encouraged him, and helped him recognize new possibilities for his future.

Now, Juan is preparing to earn his Associate in Arts degree and continue his education toward a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.

Finding Community and a New Way of Thinking

At Indian River State College, Juan quickly found a sense of belonging among students who shared his ambition and encouraged one another to succeed.

“We really feel like there’s potential in each other, even if we can’t see it in ourselves,” Juan shares.

That community became especially important as Juan tackled challenging math and physics courses. Among the professors who shaped his experience, Dr. Quan Zheng stands out.

Dr. Zheng’s physics course was one of the hardest Juan had ever taken, but it ultimately transformed the way he approached learning and problem-solving. The experience pushed him to understand problems at a deeper level and gave him a way of thinking he believes will extend far beyond the classroom.

When the coursework became difficult, Juan also leaned on his classmates. They worked through challenges together, sharing their strengths and helping one another improve along the way.

The Freedom to Focus on His Future

As a Promise Program student, Juan was able to pursue his education without the same financial uncertainty that can make college feel out of reach.

With his education covered through the program, he could focus on learning, exploring his interests, and adjusting to the independence of college.

“I really had nothing to worry about except learning and teaching myself,” Juan says.

For Juan, that opportunity also inspired him to think differently about his own potential.

Asked what he would say to a donor who helped make his experience possible, Juan expressed gratitude for someone believing in his future without ever having met him.

“Thank you for inspiring me to care about myself,” he says. “Thank you for not knowing me, yet giving me the opportunity.”

Carrying the Momentum Forward

This spring, Juan will celebrate an important milestone before taking the next step toward his future. He plans to transfer and continue pursuing a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.

He’ll take with him the lessons learned in challenging classrooms, the mentorship of professors like Dr. Zheng, the friendships that helped him persevere, and the confidence to keep pursuing opportunities that once felt distant.

Juan’s journey is a reminder that opportunity can do more than remove a financial barrier. It can give students the freedom to discover their abilities, recognize their potential, and imagine just how far they can go.
