The Indian River State College Alumni Association Engages with Students of All Ages
Laura Midkiff, the Director of Alumni Relations at Indian River State College, firmly believes that you grow alumni one student at a time. “Engaging with current students, as well as those we encourage to attend Indian River State College, is a priority for me,” says Midkiff. “By sponsoring events on our campuses and participating in various activities, I can spread the word that our Alumni Association exists and is expanding.” 2025 has provided numerous opportunities to highlight our organization and connect with our students before they become alumni:
- Our Director of Alumni Relations was the guest speaker at the Student Government Association (SGE) general assembly meeting, where she spoke about making connections and the importance of good manners.
- The Alumni Association sponsored a luncheon for high-GPA student veterans, celebrating their accomplishments in the classroom while thanking them for their service.
- Students were treated to a “Relax & Recharge” event as they began to prepare for final exams. The Alumni Association brought mini-ponies to two campuses, allowing students to destress through laughter and socialization.
- Over 100 local high school Key Club students convened on the Indian River State College Massey Campus in March for their annual Key Club Conclave ’25. Lunch was sponsored by the Indian River State College Alumni Association, planting the seed that IRSC may be the perfect place to attend college.
- March saw 287 guests attend Indian River State College’s Descubre event, which allows Spanish-speaking families to learn more about IRSC. Kendy Campusano and Gabby Garcia served as our alumni speakers. The Alumni Association donated a gift basket for the evening’s raffle.
- Engaging with our student leaders is a priority for the Alumni Association. Thus, participation as a breakout session leader at our 7th annual Leadership Summit was a perfect fit (and a lot of fun as we did string art crafting).
- Indian River State College is a great place to learn, as our Child Development Center children can attest. Our Director of Alumni Relations was the guest reader for our Child Development Center’s Story Hour – The Red Umbrella was a hit! Donating 1000 filled plastic eggs, just one week later, for the Easter Egg Hunt was the icing on the cake!
- Cupcakes, commencement, and caps – the Alumni Association purchased the supplies and eats for a graduation cap decorating event. Soon-to-be alumni enjoyed an afternoon of decorating their caps for our Commencement Ceremonies, which took place on April 30th, May 1st, and May 2nd.
If we meet students where they are and help them feel connected (while creating positive memories) to our College, we can scale our organization based on the idea that the Alumni Association is already a part of the students’ happy recollections.
